The West Midlands local office undertakes (on behalf of HEE) the Tier 2 sponsorship for England and Tier 4 sponsorship for the UK (4 nations). They manage the applications from trainees and issue the Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS) for Tier 2 applicants and Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for Tier 4 applicants.
May to July is the peak time for applications as trainees apply upon appointment to their training programme.
The trainee cohorts under the responsibility of West Midlands are:

Reporting requirements
Need to be able to to extract the fields listed below for any trainee who is on a Tier 2 visa or a Tier 4 visa:
- Full name
- GMC number
- LTFT status (whether full or part time)
- OOP status
- Current rotation – name of the Trust
- Start and end date of the current rotation
- If the doctor is not in training (other than OOP) then why – i.e. mat leave, long term sick leave.
- Last ARCP outcome – so that we can see whether they’re likely to need an extension or whether they have been dismissed from training.
- CCT date
TIS as an application system
Currently applicants can only submit a visa application once they have issued with a CoS/CAS. Jess has requested that TIS could be used to support the application process – new appointees have access to the appliation function via the TIS portal upon their record being imported from Oriel or via the import template and allow the trainee to submit information and upload documentation so that WM can issue the CoS/CAS. Attached following documents:
- The current Tier 2 CoS application form – one for new applicants who are not currently sponsored by HEE and one for extensions for applicants who are currently in training and sponsored by HEE
- Screenshots of the current layout of the Tier 4 portal
- The current Tier 4 dental application form and guidance documents for local teams (for document checking purposes etc.) NOTE - this links to the request by Angela Fletcher to have the checklist recorded on TIS.
